Tom, you've exposed the 800 lb gorilla in the room! There's nothing more painful than a great team member (who you RELY UPON) telling you they need to speak with you in private.

And, from their point of view I GET why they can be frustrated at our NON-Policy on staff raises. If we were any other business it would be spelled out clearly. What can you expect and when will it happen.

I will be sitting down with my team today and introducing our new staff raises policy. Given that I've missed giving raises in some cases for a couple years, and have HAD no clearly spelled out policy which promises ACTION on MY part, I know this will go a long way with them.

    Great "Gem." Thanks for this!

    All my best,

    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Truly my pleasure. When my dad was alive he used to say that we practice in a "cottage" industry. Sure, we go to a few meetings with other dentists, but we are, for the most part, ISOLATED from each other on a day in and day out basis.

The last 15 years personally coaching dentists have been a HUGE eye opener for me... specifically with respect to realizing how many dentists are just a few "Gems" short of BREAKING THROUGH to MUCH HIGHER profitability and professional satisfaction.

Love to have the opportunity to get to know you and your team, and to help you realize and achieve your own breakthrough to massive profitability. Rekindle the dreams and help you LIVE them. Take a moment to fill out the form on my blog (your biggest issues). After you submit the form, a Personal Gems Concierge will be happy to speak with you about how we can help.

    Warm regards,
    tom

My numbers (production and collections) are down 10% over last year. How can anybody expect or even ask for a raise when I take a hit?

    Great post, Tom!
I remember those days too well!

Staff know that we're typically on-the-run, juggling a ton of responsibility and distractions during the day. They know when to hit us at that weak moment when "we just want the problem to go away."

One other caveat...NEVER meet a staff member in private - never in a closed office with no windows and certainly not after hours when other staff have gone for the day. Many documented cases of extortion for claims falsely made against a doctor for inappropriate behavior.
